What is ‘Eco-Schools’?

Most young people care deeply about environmental issues and wish to make a positive change in the environment around them. The Eco-Schools programme provides an ideal way for fostering environmental awareness in the entire school in a way that links to many curriculum subjects. The primary aim regarding the Eco-Schools scheme is to combine learning and action for the improvement of the environmental performance of Eco-Schools.

It is an international, environmental award programme which helps to address a variety of environmental themes, ranging from litter and waste to healthy living and biodiversity. The children are the driving force behind Eco-Schools – they lead the eco-committee and help carry out an audit to assess the environmental performance of their school. Through consultation with the rest of the school and the wider community, it is the children who decide which environmental themes they want to address and how they are going to do it. Measuring and monitoring is an integral part of the Eco-Schools programme, they provide us with all the evidence needed to document and reward our environmental success.

Schools work towards gaining awards – Bronze, Silver and the prestigious Green Flag award, which symbolizes excellence in the field of environmental activity. We are proud to say that we have successfully achieved all three with the later, the prestigious ‘Green Flag’ being awarded to us in June 2018. The green flag must be renewed every two years and so we start our journey again. The eco committee will be leading the project under my guidance. They must choose three out of a possible seven areas on which to focus their efforts. This time, we have chosen Litter, Travel and Global Learning as our three topics.

The future of the planet is in our hands and so learning about these important issues above is a crucial aspect of children’s education. We try to create an environment in school which promotes them and enables them to experience first-hand the importance of environmental and global awareness and how we can all make a difference.
