WORKHOUSE VISIT

7th Apr 2025
Today P6 & 7 visited LCDI to hear all about life in the past in the workhouses, which tied into their World Around Us topic on β€˜Hunger’ .
LCDI is situated in the old Newton Limavady Workhouse.
On our arrival we were met by Karen, who was to be our guide around the workhouse.
Karen explained that the workhouse opened on the 15th March 1842, and that it was seen by many as a last resort.
The children found out that almost everyone was put to work in the workhouse.
The rooms (dorms) were overcrowded, with very little room. If you wanted to wash you had to go and get water - using the wash bowls in the photographs, and carry it up the stairs - no showers or instant hot water here.
We would like to take this time to thank Karen for taking us around this morning but also LCDI for letting us come and visit the workhouse today, it was very interesting πŸ‘πŸ™ŒπŸ˜Š
